Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is quickly approaching, y’all. (It’s Feb. 21 this year.) And up here in Detroit that means one thing: Paczki (poonch-key) fever. Our local distillery, Detroit City Distillery, even makes a special paczki vodka that sells out every year (though you can still get a bottle right now!).
It was all a donut-shaped mystery to me until last year, when I ate my very first one. This year I’m taking a paczki-making class and writing an essay about their cultural history for our Feb. 21 issue. I’d love to hear your thoughts. But first, a poll:

I never knew until I started seeing signs for them. Maybe that was mid to late 80's(?).
