Sunday Community Thread: Tell Me About Where You Live

I’ve always loved the idea of place and getting to know a place. When I was little, my dad was a truck driver and he would occasionally take me on the road with him. I loved those days. He always knew exactly where to stop, where the coffee would be hot and the food tasty. When we’d leave, we’d grab a copy of the small-town newspaper and he’d ask me to read it to him. I was barely beyond “Hop on Pop,” but I loved sounding out the words and learning about places as the highway spooled out before us.
Now I live in Detroit and write a lot about place and how it shapes our identity. One of my special places is Belle Isle, the 900+ acre park that sits in the Detroit River between us and Canada. I like to walk my dog on its banks, particularly in the winter when the shards pile up on shore like dominoes. I find my center there.
This week, I’d love to know more about your place. What makes it special or unique? What is happening that you think people should know about? Maybe sometime I can come and see it and write about it for Bar\Heart.
Tell me about your corner of the Midwest and what makes it special. Maybe it’s your corner bar. Or interesting history. Or a block that you always dreamed of calling home. Whatever it is, share your place with us!

Belle Isle on a recent afternoon.
